Prevent Your Chinchilla From Suffering In The Heat

Chinchilla Chinchillas

Chinchillas cannot bear the heat of the sun and humid weather. Their bodies cannot easily adjust to this grueling temperature because their fur is much thicker than other animals. In fact, Chinchillas are one of the animals that have the thickest fur. In some cases, when Chinchillas are exposed to unbearable heat, they can have heat stroke or brain damage.

It is important that when the temperature is hot, Chinchillas should be kept inside the home. Sometimes an air conditioned might be required in order to make sure that you will be able to keep your pet in a cool temperature. Fans are not enough to keep Chinchillas cool.

Chinchillas can suffer from heat prostration when they are exposed to too much heat. Heat prostration usually happens when you see your pet is resting on one side of its body with uneven breathing. They appear that they can no longer manage their breath and would want to already give up. Of course you don’t want your pet to experience. When this happens, pick up your pet gently and carefully and keep it company as well.

You can use a cloth to cool your pet down. You can also put the cloth insider the freezer to keep it cool and then make it touch the body of your pet so that it can feel the coolness. You can also consider spraying mists of lukewarm or cool water on your pet’s body and the like. This will certainly make your pet feel alert and cool once again.

Dehumidifier and Thermometer

Chinchillas cannot be placed in a humid environment. If you have plans of keeping your pet in the basement, make sure that you have a dehumidifier installed in it. Make sure that you keep a thermometer close by in order for you to be able to check the temperature of your pet from time to time.

During the winter season, the temperature should not be more than 70 degrees. The humidity should not be more than 80 percent where your chinchilla is existing. The sum of the two is not to go past 150. If it does, your pet is in danger for brain damage and death.

There are some other ways of keeping your pet Chinchilla cool. You can include frozen fruit bars in its cage and this is good for them to nibble it. Don’t use ice for your pet because it can spill and melt easily and can simply make your pet and its cage dirty instantly.
